America’s oldest family-owned premium cigar maker

Since 1895, four generations of the Newman family have preserved the art of cigar making—spanning the historic brick halls of Ybor City to the rich soils of Central America.

Founded in 1895, J.C. Newman is America’s oldest family-owned cigar maker. From our iconic El Reloj factory in Tampa—featuring tours, dining, and a museum—to our handcrafting in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, four generations continue America’s cigar-making tradition daily.

Introduced by Julius Newman in 1937, Brick House cigars were inspired by the house in which he was born — the only brick house in his small Hungarian village, where family, friends and neighbors gathered nightly to enjoy each other’s company. Reintroduced more than 80 years later by third-generation owners, Eric and Bobby Newman, Brick House cigars have become a favorite across the globe.

Three Soils. One Legacy.

The character of a premium cigar is born long before it reaches the hands of a master roller. From the sun-drenched volcanic earth of Estelí to the historic brick halls of Ybor City and the legendary valleys of Santiago, our tobacco spans three distinct worlds. Each soil imparts its own signature weight, aroma, and lineage—shaping the diverse portfolio of J.C. Newman.

Three Steps. One Cigar.

Preparing leaf

01Every cigar begins with the leaf. Our torcedores select, moisten and strip each tobacco leaf by hand, cutting the wrapper with a chaveta blade so its natural oils and character are preserved.

Rolling the bunch

02Filler leaves are blended and bunched into a binder, then pressed in wooden molds. The bunch decides how evenly a cigar draws and burns — the quiet heart of the craft.

Finishing the cigar

03The wrapper is rolled on, the cap is applied and every cigar is inspected by hand before it is banded, boxed and aged — ready for the moments when time stands still.

J.C. Newman Cigar Company’s long history dates back more than a century to 1895, when Julius Caeser Newman rolled his first cigars in the family barn in Cleveland, Ohio.

At the young age of 14, Julius Caeser Newman (J.C.), became a cigar maker apprentice in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1890, the Newmans were recent immigrants to the United States and J.C.’s mother, Hannah, paid $3.00 per month so that he could learn the cigar trade. After completing his apprenticeship, J.C. worked as a journeyman cigar maker for the next 3 years until a severe recession resulted in massive layoffs throughout the country. As an unemployed immigrant cigar maker, J.C. decided to follow the “American Dream” and start his own company.

Though his dreams of success were great, the company’s beginnings were quite simple. In 1895, J.C. created a cigar table from some old boards, borrowed $50 for tobacco, and received his first order for 500 cigars from the family grocer. The business that started that day in the barn behind the family home was the J.C. Newman Cigar Company.
